Houston Astros teammates Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole were first and second in American League Cy Young Award voting in 2019. It was the fourth time that teammates have taken the top two spots. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling did it in 2001 and 2002 for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In 1974, Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Mike Marshall won and starter Andy Messersmith was second. Don Sutton, another Dodgers starter, placed fourth but the Dodgers didn’t win the World Series with three out of the top four Cy Young Award vote-getters. They lost to the Oakland A’s who had the A.L. Cy winner in 1974, Jim “Catfish” Hunter.
Here are the remaining instances where teammates earned either two of the top three or three of the top five in Cy voting.
